5 Things to Consider When Choosing Music for Your Video

If you want to make a great video, picking the right soundtrack is essential. As a video editing company, we at DreamItReel put a lot of time and thought into selecting a song that perfectly matches the style and purpose of each video we produce.

Here’s a list of things we consider when choosing music that can help you pick out the ideal soundtrack for your video.

  1. Music First, Video Second

Whether you’re editing the video yourself or giving it to someone else  it’s always a good idea to settle on the music first. You want the visuals to match the soundtrack, so if you change the music later on a good deal of your editing will be useless. In other words, changing the song can mean going back to square one.

  1. The Occasion

You’re not going to pick the same music for a wedding video that you would for a snowboarding video  are you? Considering the occasion, event, or subject is a good starting point when determining what song to use. Mango from TuneFruit wrote a detailed article on the DreamItReel blog that breaks down different occasions what music to use for each.

  1. The Story

Do you want a video that slowly builds to a big climax, or one that is cheerful and fun  Maybe you want to take the viewer on a roller coaster of emotions or deliver something epic and in your face  Whatever the story, the soundtrack will be the foundation. Let the music will plot out the journey and the visuals will simply fall into place.

  1. Your Audience

Loud and electronic might be a good choice for a young, hip crowd, but not so much if you’re going after middle-aged parents  Put some thought into what’s popular with your target audience and what kind of music will resonate with their generation, background, and culture.

  1. Lyrics or No Lyrics

Another important decision that can help narrow things down quickly. If your video has people speaking or voiceover in it, lyrics can be conflicting. Also, music with words can be distracting so if you want your viewer to focus on the content of your video and not the lyrics of the song, an instrumental track might be the way to go.

These tips are sure to help you pick music that matches the story and goals of your video.  Need some help with your video editing? DreamItReel makes it easy and affordable to get high quality video editing so give us a shout and say Tunefruit sent you!

I know you all have been waiting for it! Here’s this week’s taste of some fresh new music coming into our library that I just absolutely love!

Listen Now: “Loving it” Stock Music Playlist Week 30

  1. “Frisky Fun” – BrownHouseCreative

Just as the title suggests, there is an air of upbeat, positive energy. This modern latin stock music track has me all pumped up to kick my day off with a little bit of zest and spice.

  1. “The Winter Pass” – Pete Hawkey

If you have been stuck up in the northern blizzard that has been going on for the past few weeks this track is for you. Don your most relatable Eskimo gear and brave the cold with this passionate and determined classical track.

  1. “The Middle Way” – vpedulla

Imagine a slow motion panoramic shot of a serene hotel top spa, which overlooks the ocean. Then the shot slowly zooms in on me, sipping a tiny cocktail, with a tiny umbrella. Yes, I know, even a guava berry can be as cool as George Clooney with this hip, ambient stock track.

  1. “Dancing Condor” – SGA

There are always great instrument combos out there but some take you by surprise. Here we’ve got a few Andean instruments, the likes of flutes and lutes but combined with a fun, upbeat Moog keyboard. Feels like you’re as high as a condor!

  1. “One Million Kites” – Jonathan Wright

There truly is a sense of amazement for a child when he or she first lets a kite fly. There you are holding as tight as you possibly can, praying the wind doesn’t take you or your kite away. This classical stock music track nails that sense of joy and freedom.

  1. “Cowboy Lament” – jfbenning

You know what I’ve wanted to do more than be a cowboy? Sit around a campfire and just reminisce on my past cowboy days with all my cow buds. I’d say things like, “remember ol’ Tommy Six-Shooter?” Then we’d all get kicked out of the mart’s parking lot for making a fire.

  1. “Condemned to Happiness” – Skindiver

Fine! I’ll go! Condemn me to this happiness if you must. I definitely won’t take much convincing to hop on this mainframe of joy and listen to this electronic stock music track.

  1. “Retro Groovy Organ” – runfirestop

Am I disqualified from writing blogs if I mention George Clooney twice in one “Loving It”? I dare say I would have to disagree. One just can’t over mention the man. Anywho, I’m digging this grooving stock track as it takes me back to Ocean’s 11.

  1. “The Monstrosity” – little pioneer

Immediately groovetastic. Looking to cruise the mean streets of NYC with your crew? Up to no good like a youthful hooligan? This jazzy, hip hop stock music track is the perfect ticket for your afternoon shenanigans.

  1. “Golden Horizon” – GoldenEar

I’m going to leave you guys with this inspiring string ensemble. Feel the building sensation that you can capture your dreams and glory! People had said “you’re no fruit.” But look at me now! Wikipedia even acknowledges my triumph!

What a great orchestral and electronic hybrid stock music track. The arpeggiated synth in the background, combined with the string ensemble build a sense of determination and adventure.

  1. “On Right Now” – JesusV

Sometimes you need that modern, contemporary “now” element in your promo video. JesusV has mixed an electronic stock music track with ambient elements, to bring you what the youth want to hear.

  1. “Innovative Solution” – Small Ocean

Switching your business over to a more “green” element? Planning on opening up that new tech division in your business? Here’s the relaxing ambient stock track you need for the backdrop.

  1. “Djembuka Ritual” – Petrosfera

Looking to escape the Middle East in a nail biting adventure scene? The fast-paced mix of djembe playing with electronic pulses in the background ratchets up the adrenaline!

  1. “Sexy Lady” – ikoliks

Awwwww yeah. Time to grab your loved one and take she or he on a night out on the town. Get yourself dressed to the nines and take it slow this evening. Make sure to play this soulful track to maximize the love level.

  1. “Revolutionize” – TheIsland

You remember your teenage angst? Trust me all of our hormones had us ramped up on rebellion so don’t feel too bad. “Revolutionize” does a great job capturing our former punk rock elements.

  1. “The Tiny World” – danielgoh

This isn’t so much a saying as a truth – “childlike wonder.” With a quiet and cute orchestra, Mr. Goh creates what every child feels when venturing out into the world – wonder, awe, and amazement.

  1. “Glorious Ascending” – UniqueSound

There will come a moment where you are called upon to don your cape and mask. You will need to go out into the world and save all the lost puppies and kittens….well, no probably not but if you were a superhero, this is your heroic stock music track.

  1. “Little Star” – Kubed

Here is a pop-like synth stock music track. You’ve gotta just let yourself go and embrace the moment sometimes. If you ever get stressed out in your work day, jam out to this positive and peppy dance beat.

  1. “Lift Up” – Seastock

Grab your super awesome headphones and start playing this powerful, alt/indie stock music track. This really gets the blood pumping and anyone can feel good with these guitars and drums ripping in the background.

Tunefruit Daily Freshpicks: The Roots

Check it out: The Roots

Yo. Good Monday morning folks. When this Tunefruit (Mango) was in college (a well-known music school in Boston), I had the opportunity to have more than a few roommates, who unlike me, actually lived in, or around, great NE cities. And one of these roommates, who grew up in Philadelphia, turned me on to this band. This magical, super-duper hippity-hoppity band. They were (slash ARE) called The Roots. While their quality from Album to Album (there are several) can be…ahem…cough, cough…erratic, their 1st Major Label album was Do You Want More?!!!??1.

And it was so painfully funky, thoughtful, and real, that thousands of college kids across the world had serious cases of “exploded-head-syndrome” in their dorm rooms while first hearing this album.

With the smooth rapping style of Black Thought and the TOTALLY-AMAZE-BALLZZ?uestlove on drums, this band literally defined the sound of Philly Hip-Hop. Yeah.

We pulled a few tracks from similar artists to honor the greatest Late Night Band ever…The Roots.
